Che Guevara Effect

Now many, if not most of you have seen the image below of the rebel,Che Guevara . Well now I'm going to show you how to duplicate this effect.

First open up the image you are going to edit. I suggest a head shot of yourself in this pose. Right-Click on the background layer and Add Alpha Channel.

Next you want to use the Intelligent Scissors tool and select yourself. You want to try and make this as accurate as possible.

Next you want to remove the background, so invert the selection as shown then hit Delete to clear.

Next you want to crop the image so you can work in a reasonable space.

Use the Crop tool, rectangle over a reasonable area, click to crop.

Now you want to Desaturate the image, Colors>Desaturate,Value= Average

Now for the hard tone effect, Colors>Threshold. Here is where your own discretion kicks in. Slide the black arrow to the left until you're satisfied. You want a "hard" two tone effect, kinda like a photocopied image.

Finally, use the Magic Wand tool, select the Transparent area of the image (gray checkers). Use the paint tool, color in the background color and you're done!

Here's two finished variations:
